REPORTING

This story started with one father's story: He will never know how his son died. His death was initially ruled an accidental drug overdose, but toxicology revealed years later that the only drug in his system was marijuana, which drug experts do not believe can cause an overdose death. I dug into the records in this one case and uncovered a bigger problem: Coroners in this state have few requirements and some aren't going to training. The legislature is now considering changes that would require training.

This story began while I was at a data journalism conference; my Uber driver, Nick Daniels, is the subject of this story. Police tasered him in a bar in Columbia, Missouri - initially saying he'd punched an officer. I collected documents, video depositions, body camera video and other records to show that likely never happened. I reported, wrote and video-edited this story. Daniels has a case pending in the local court system.

This is a collection of my reporting work in Boise, Idaho, where I worked as both a general assignment and investigative reporter. Stories include wildfire coverage and an investigation into a city wrongfully billing a resident for putting out a fire at her property. The compilation also includes a story I dayturned, showing that dozens of people had big car repair bills after a gas station improperly put diesel into the regular gas tanks. This story resulted in people getting their money back for repairs.

I appeared as an expert journalist on a 2018 episode of Crime Watch Daily. The episode profiled a murder case I covered gavel-to-gavel.
